Put the boys in. And may God forgive me for the order.

New Market Battlefield State Historical Park

Nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, the town of New Market, Virginia is a peaceful, pastoral landscape much like it was in 1864. It was here that the armies of Union Gen. Franz Sigel and Confederate Gen. John C. Breckinridge met in battle on May 15th of that year. This Confederate victory remains strong in memory due to the participation of the VMI Corps of Cadets.

Today there are many sites to visit and discovery New Market’s history.

The New Market Battlefield Military Museum has one of the largest collection of authentic military memorabilia on display anywhere. View thousands of artifacts, such as Native American and American Military History from 1750, chronologically arranged with extensive information provided for each exhibit. Includes a walking tour of the battlefield with its granite and marble monuments that mark troop positions of the Battle of New Market.

The New Market Battlefield State Historical Park and Virginia Museum of the Civil War are operated by the Virginia Military Institute. This park includes the Bushong Farm, and the “Field of Lost Shoes” where the VMI Cadets made their famous charge. The museum features interpretive exhibits about the Battle of New Market Virginia in the Civil War.

The Strayer House is the location of the main office of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation and several local businesses. It also houses an orientation center with artifacts and interpretive panels detailing the history of New Market and the Battle of New Market.
