A Chronology of Armed Conflict

There were 326 armed conflicts in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War, as noted in the National Park Service’s 1992 “Study of Civil War Sites in the Shenandoah Valley.”* The list below includes all of those clashes, and ranges from small skirmishes to the immense struggles at Third Winchester (Opequon) and Cedar Creek.

20 of those battles stand out because of their significance, and are covered in more detail in the “Battles and Campaigns” section of this website. However, as the original study noted, “the range of comparison among these battles is so large that use of the term “battle” to describe all equally could be questioned.”

As you read the list below, you’ll see a variety of terms used to refer to these conflicts. The 19th- and early 20th-century archivists who compiled the Official Records and other event lists and chronologies used a ranking system of “battle,” “engagement,” and ”action” based on the command structure of the forces engaged (typically the Union forces engaged). Rather than providing guidance as to the size and intensity of an encounter, these terms tell us only that: a battle was directed by the ranking general of the military district and involved the bulk of the forces under his command; an engagement might be directed by a subordinate leader or involve only a portion of the armies in the field; and an action was a conflict, typically limited in scope, that could not be easily labeled a battle or an engagement. This early ranking system was not designed to describe or interpret events but to award appropriate plaudits to the commanding officers and the units involved.

For the men who lost their lives, and the loved ones they left behind, such particulars were largely meaningless. The loss and the pain was the same – no matter if they fell in a brief skirmish on a lonely back road, or in the maelstrom of the Middle Field at The Third Battle of Winchester. This original text for this article comes from the National Park Service’s 1992 “Study of Civil War Sites in the Shenandoah Valley.”
