Rutherford’s Farm Battlefield

This was the first time the Yankees ever saw my back, but it was run or die and of course we preferred the former.
— Confederate Col. Charles C. Blacknall, 23rd North Carolina Infantry

Sketch of the home and property owned by J.H. Rutherford - 3 miles north of Winchester looking south

The Battle of Rutherford’s Farm was a rare Union victory in the Valley, coming amidst a steady stream of defeats at the hands of Confederate Gen. Jubal A. Early during the summer of 1864. Confederate Gen. Stephen Ramseur was positioned just north of Winchester to defend against Union cavalry under Gen. William Averell. Both sides underestimated the size of their opponent and launched attacks. Confederate lines held until a flank attack along the Turnpike by Gen. George Crook overlapped the Confederate left and forced them to retreat.

Unfortunately, the Rutherford’s Farm Battlefield has been largely lost to development. The Rutherford’s Crossing Shopping center now occupies the main area of the battle. However, a small interpretive area is maintained on the side of U.S. Route 11 next to the Red Robin Parking lot with several signs that describe the battle.
